The case of the gigantic lotto jackpots

No one matched all the numbers in the Powerball lottery Wednesday night so the jackpot for Saturday has grown to a $270 million annuity or $175.8 million cash value

The Mega Millions lottery is not far behind.
The jackpot for Friday's drawing is a $154 million annuity or a $115 million cash value.

The odds of winning the grand prize in either game is about 1 in 175 million.

Powerball tickets are $2 each. Numbers are drawn Wednesday and Saturdays. The first five numbers are drawn from 59 white balls and the Powerball is drawn from 35 red balls.
The largest Powerball jackpot was drawn Nov. 28, 2012 for a $587.5 million annuity or a $384.7 million cash value. In March, the Powerball jackpot rose to $320 million.

Mega Millions tickets cost $1 each. Players pick five numbers from 1 to 56 and one number from 1 to 46 (the Mega Ball).
Drawings are held on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Mega Millions had the largest jackpot in the world on March 30, 2012 when three tickets matched to share a $656 million annuity.
